The Soul Of Ireland.
Hailing from the heart of Dublin, Ireland, 18 year old Laura Izibor is
embarking on what is destined to be a remarkable journey as a vocalist,
songwriter and musician. Laura was first introduced to the piano at 13 years
old. In February of 2003, at the tender age of 15 she entered, and
subsequently won, Ireland's national and prestigious "2FM Song Contest". The
contest was broadcast ‘live’ on Ireland's national radio station, 2FM. It
was at that moment that the nation got its first taste of Laura’s unique
voice and rare song writing abilities. She made such a powerful impression
that the station played her winning song, “Compatible”, in daytime rotation
long after the contest was over. However, her success wasn’t just limited to
radio: the Irish national television station, RTE, made a short documentary
on Laura after her victory and it continues to air on Irish TV to this day.
2004 was a notable year for Laura.
Since winning the 2FM Song Contest she performed at many major venues,
opening for James Brown, Angie Stone and Jamie Cullum, amongst others. She
was also asked to join multi-platinum selling artists Reamonn on their sold
out European Tour, "The Great Beautiful Sky." 2004 also marked the year that
Laura made Irish music history by becoming the only ‘unsigned’ artist to
ever be nominated for the Meteor Irish Music Awards (Ireland’s version of
The Grammy’s). She was nominated in two categories: "Best New Act" and "Best
New Hope for 2004". It wasn’t long before Laura was showcasing for labels in
LA & NYC, which ultimately led to her signing a record deal with Jive
Records in the US.
Laura is the newest member of a select club of soulful Irish artists that
already boasts Van Morrison, U2, The Chieftains and Sinead O’Connor amongst
its members. To get a true glimpse into Laura’s eclectic mix of old-school
60’s southern soul and classic Brill Building pop, just ask her what her
favorite album of all-time is: Carole King's "Tapestry", which was released
16 years before she was even born! After just one listen to this precocious,
piano playing 17 year old, it becomes clear why people are starting to draw
stylistic comparisons to legendary seminal soul singer Candi Staton, early
Aretha Franklin and contemporaries such as Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys.
Incidentally, true to her singer-songwriter roots, Laura writes all of her
material, 100% by herself. Laura is currently recording her debut album for
Jive Records. We believe that Laura Izibor is on her way to becoming a
treasured artist for years to come.
